UK business numbers slipped while SMEs still carried most employment

Official estimates count about 5.5 million private-sector businesses at the start of 2024. SMEs are 99.8% of businesses and around 60% of private-sector employment, yet the total business population and SME employment have both edged down from 2023.

Enormous importance, no momentum. That combination shapes what can be sold into this market.

The business thought

It creates demand for tools with provable payback and very little tolerance for anything else. In a cautious market, software that is merely nice to have is the first line item cut.

Products tied to revenue, labour savings, compliance or cash collection hold up. Products tied to ambition do not.

The practical watch

Segment UK SMEs by employment, sector and digital maturity before deciding anything about product or price.

The term spans a solo consultant and a two-hundred-person manufacturer. One proposition rarely fits both, and the attempt to make it fit is where a great deal of go-to-market money disappears.
