How we write these.

Who writes our tools and definitions, where the facts come from, and what to do if you spot a mistake.

In short. Every tool, calculator and definition here is written by the Mowbray team, checked against official or recognised sources where they exist, and dated. Calculators show their formulas. Nothing you type into a tool leaves your browser. If something is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

Who writes them

The Mowbray team: founders and operators from a range of industries who have built, run and sold businesses. We do not use named bylines, so the standard has to show in the work itself.

Where the facts come from

Official sources first: government guidance, legislation, regulators and standards bodies. Where there is no official source, we use recognised professional bodies or published research, and we link to what we used. Each glossary term shows the date we last checked its sources.

How figures are worked out

Every calculator sets out its formulas on the page, so you can check the arithmetic or do it on paper. Results are estimates built only from the figures you enter. We do not invent averages, benchmarks or statistics to fill a gap.

Examples

Examples are illustrations, not client stories, unless we say otherwise. We keep them ordinary and plain so they are easy to map onto your own situation.

Keeping them up to date

Legal and regulatory terms are re-checked when the rules change, and the date on the page moves only when we have actually checked. The starting a business checklist is dated and every step links to its official source.

Your data

The tools run in your browser. What you type is not sent to us or stored on a server. Some tools let you copy a link that holds your answers in the link itself, and the process worksheet remembers your entries in your own browser so you can come back to it. We count anonymous events, such as a tool being started or completed, never the figures you enter.

Guidance, not advice

Our resources are general guidance to help you think something through. They are not legal, tax or financial advice for your situation. For that, speak to a qualified adviser.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, an out-of-date figure or a broken link, email hello@mowbray.net and we will check it and correct the page.
