Ideal customer profile (ICP)

In short. An ideal customer profile is a description of the type of customer a business serves best and most profitably. It sets out the characteristics, such as size, sector, location, need and buying behaviour, that make a customer a good fit, so marketing and sales effort is aimed at the right people.

Last checked against its sources on 10 October 2026. How we write these.

An ICP is about who to focus on, not who could buy. The US Small Business Administration makes the point that a business will not be for everybody, so it is important to have a clear sense of whom it will serve.

To build one, look at your best existing customers: those who pay on time, stay longest, need little rescue and refer others. Note what they have in common. For a business customer this may include size, industry and the role of the buyer. For consumers it may be age, location, interests and the problem they are solving.

Suppose an accountancy practice finds that its happiest clients are owner-managed building firms with five to twenty staff. That becomes the ICP, shaping where it advertises, what it writes about and which enquiries it prioritises.

An ICP is different from a buyer persona, which describes an individual, and from the total market, which is everyone who might buy. Review it as the business learns, because early assumptions often turn out wrong. A sharper profile usually lowers acquisition cost and improves the quality of customers.

Questions people ask

How narrow should an ICP be?

Narrow enough to guide decisions about where to look and what to say, but wide enough to supply enough customers. Most businesses refine it over time using real results.

How is an ICP different from a target market?

A target market is the broader group you aim to serve. An ICP picks out the subset that is the best fit and most valuable.
