Registered office address

In short. A registered office address is the official address of a UK company, where legal notices and official post can be sent. It must be a physical address in the same part of the UK where the company is registered, and it appears on the public Companies House register.

Every UK limited company must have a registered office. It is the formal point of contact for Companies House, HMRC and anyone serving legal documents on the company. It does not have to be where the business actually trades.

Companies House says the address must be in the part of the UK where the company was incorporated: England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. It must be a physical address, and a PO Box is only acceptable if the full address of the physical building is also given. Since March 2024 it must also be an appropriate address, meaning post sent there should reach someone acting for the company.

The address is public. If you use your home address, it will be visible on the register, and earlier registered office addresses stay on the record after a change.

This matters for a founder working from a spare room. Many use an accountant's address or a registered office service instead, which keeps the home address off the register for future filings. Whoever provides the address must pass on post promptly, because missed official letters can lead to missed deadlines.

Questions people ask

Can my registered office be my home address?

Yes, if it is a physical address in the correct part of the UK, but it will be publicly visible, and changing it later does not remove the earlier address from the record.

Can I change my registered office later?

Yes, you can change it, but earlier addresses remain on the public record.
